What is Yoga Therapy?

Yoga Therapy is the science of applying yoga to treat emotional, mental and/or physical health difficulties in the process of healing. It is not about the story of the past, it is more about working with the difficulties as they show themselves in the here and now. Yoga Therapy can be a valuable compliment to alternative modern medicine.

Yoga Therapy is founded on the guiding framework of the Kosha model from ancient yogic traditions, viewing the individual holistically across 5 layers (lifestyle, body, mind, intellect, and spirit). Yoga Therapy involves breathing techniques (Pranayama), embodied movement and yoga postures (Asanas), meditation (Dhyãna) and mindfulness-based approaches, as well as applied practices, skills and lifestyle guidance.

Who I work with

If you have a body and you have a breath, then yoga therapy is suitable for you. You do not need to be ‘a yogi’, ‘strong’, ‘flexible’ or ‘spiritual’. Yoga Therapy is for everybody and every body, of all abilities, including complete beginners; the intervention is tailored to your unique needs.

The Kosha Model

 Annamaya kosha - ‘Anna’ (food)

The outermost physical layer; the physical body as an outer shell; concerned with our physical resourcing of energy to fuel our system

~ Physical body, movement, nutrition and lifestyle guidance.

Pranamaya kosha - ‘Prana’ (energy)

The subtle energy layer; the automatic processes and systems within our body that are essential to life

~ Stress response, breathing, circadian rhythms, sleep patterns, digestion, immunity, restorative and regenerative processes

Manomaya kosha - ‘Mano’ (mind)

The psychological layer; the inner workings of mental and emotional processes, thoughts, thinking styles, how we feel, presence.

~ Mindfulness of thought, shaping and changing behaviours and promoting a state of being soothed rather than critical.

Vijnanamaya kosha - ‘Vij’ (wisdom)

The higher mind; this translates as discernment, and the power of judgement, and what distinguishes humans from animals.

~ Morals, values and ethics, one’s personality, and the ways in which one chooses to live their life.

Anandamaya kosha - ‘Ananda’ (bliss)

The subtle most body; higher states of consciousness, linked to ideas of something greater than ourselves.

~ Nature, spirituality, the universe, whatever brings the most joy into one’s life.

Interested in Yoga Therapy?

‘Stephanie provided me with the tools to be able to find some relief from symptoms through yoga therapy. This had a huge impact on my acceptance of myself in terms of body image and I was able sit with grief and sadness.

I did not expect such shifts and positive changes… Yoga Therapy has been a catalyst for good and hopefully lasting changes.
